In this section i will be analysing my own music magazine and comparing back to my flatplans. This section will look at My Front Cover, Contents Page and Two Page Spread.
This is the front cover of my magazine - ListenUP! (LU!). After re-looking at my flat plans i decided to adapt it various ways therefore it is very different to what i was going to do.
Firstly i decided to change the photo from a combined photo of U-Turn and Daria* to a single full body shot of Daria* I then decided to put it as the main photo on the page and let it fill the page. This meant i didnt have to put a background in. Having a background on the front cover means the photo will be smaller which may mean that the audience dont take as much notice of it. I decided to use the edited version as it added a block colour of pink into the front cover helping to attract the audience. Although the non edited photo is also in colour i decided to use this one as the 'different' look helps to show the generalised style of the magazine which in this case is Indie. Similar to many magazines in the same genre such as 'NME' and 'Kerrang' a big photo taking up the whole cover is used. They also use a photo which makes a statement which is memorable for example on the NME front cover i analysed earlier we can see the poses of the band and the different colours of clothing makes the photo memorable and stand out on the white background. After deciding to change the photo i had to decide on the texts to use. At first i decided to use block letters in capitals to make it stand out however after looking at different fonts and analysing what is used in Indie Genre magazines i changed the style and went for a 'stamp' look which gives the sense of difference. After looking at different combinations of capitals and lower case i went for capitals and lower case. ListenUP. Before i put it into my magazine i changed the colours around and the spacing of the letters which lead me to decide to have white text and to make it quite wide. This made it bigger for the audience to see. The rest of the text on my page was all Arial however after trying to change the colours of the text i stumbled across an effect which let me only do an outline. This means i can have a block colour on the outline of the text but the rest of the colours will be the background photo. The colours i used for the text on the page changed throughout the page. A different story would be in a different colour. Changing the style of the text and using the photo to cover the whole of the front cover meant the organisation of the text had to change to fit around the photo. In Kerrang magazine the text is in block letters which stands out which is different from mine. However with the use of spacing in the text on my title meant that i can still gain the 'standing out' effect. The barcode and issue number are simple and are in the same place as on my flat plan. The barcode is vital for being able to pay for a magazine. Putting it down in the corner means that it is easily visable. Similar to this placing the issue number up in the top corner means it will catch your eye but not take it away from the main purpose of the front cover (to tell you what the contents of the magazine is). Most magazines leave the barcode in a place which is easy to see so that it can be easily paid for. However the magazine issue number normally goes where the barcode is but with a space at the top i decided to add that in. On my flat plan i also decided to put cliparts/graphics around the photo and title, this was designed to add a individual/different look to the magazine however this wasnt possible when i made the decision to increase the size of the photo.
Like most of my magazine the flat plans for the front cover are very different from the magazine now. However the contents of the pages and the photos has pretty much stayed the same and only has slight variations.
This is my contents page, for this one i decided to use a background instead of a photo. After narrowing down the choices to two different colours i decided to do a gradient where they mixed into eachother. Most magazines use a plain background normally white or black; this helps people with a simple look. Which doesnt side track the reader. If we take a look at the Kerrang contents page i analysed earlier we can see that they have used a white background. With a table layout for the photos. The use of table photos means it has a neat layout but you can still see the 'indie' look because of the photos used. In my magazine flat plan i decided to place the photos at the bottom in a line. After moving the photos around i decided to put them in a column down the right hand side of the page. You are more like to look at the photos first so i put three photos on the page which are most likely to have the biggest impact. I then placed the page number of the article in the bottom corner of the photo. Therefore they dont have to read through the contents page; The contents page on magazines is the least read page in any magazine and is generally referred to so people can find the article they are looking for. At the top of the page i put the title 'CONTENTS' so to notify the audience of what the page is. I decided to use a different text from the front cover title but to make the indie style i used one with 'bouncy' letters and a font which enabled me to put a star into the title. Like the front cover i used spacing to make the letters stand out more. In my flat plans i decided to dot the stories in random places across the page using different angles and styles of text, when i attempted this it meant i couldnt have too many words on it as they would overlap. It also added a messy disorganised look which meant as a reader you would be distracted from the photos and maybe decide not to bother reading it. So i decided to change this idea and instead i put the stories in a column going down the page in numerical order. I used a basic font for this - Arial. It looks neat and is also clear and simple. The main story - which was on the front cover i made larger than the other stories i decided to do this because as i mentioned earlier not many spend time reading the contents page so if they are looking to read the main article it is easy enough for them to find it. I also decided to use a middle spacing layout this made it look neat but also didnt take up the whole of the page. The message from the editor to the readers was orignially supposed to be put in the right hand corner. In most magazines such as the magazines i analysed we can see that the editors message normally goes at the top of the page under the title. In ListenUP we put the editors message under the title yet in the middle this worked well as the articles on the contents page were put into a column. The name Listen up was done exactly the same as on the front with the use of capitals on the word 'up'. I also put capitals on the word England i decided to do this as it is a magazine designed for people in the UK and makes the reader aware of it. There is also a big underneath the contents notifying the reader of subscription - there is a special offer advertised which will make the reader consider buying it as its cheaper than buying the magazine each week, normally a subscription or advertisement would go in a coloured strip at the bottom of the page. In NME and Kerrang they use a simple colour and add a small advertisement which would be explained on a different page. In NME they use a black box with white writing in. This stands out from the rest of the page as its adding a block colour in. In my magazine i decided not to use colour this is because the use of a different style text worked as a boundary between the contents and the advertisement. I was also going to use clipart or my own designed images on the contents page. Originally i thought these would add a different but retro look to my page which helped to add a unique look. I decided to try and make these on the programme indesign, the original designs were hard to make on this programme so i chose to do simple lines and circles however similar to the random placing of the articles i found it hard to find a specific place which wouldnt take up the whole page. This meant i had to change my plan again. In the end i decided to do simple block stamps on the page (stars) in black. They stood out against my background and added a cool look to the page
This is the first page to my two page spread. I decided to focus my two page spread on the front cover story; Daria. Following my flat plans i decided to dedicate this page to only a photo. This showed a main link to the story on the second page. The photo i used was a head shot of Daria, this has good eye contact going on. Eye contact helps to form a link between the reader and the person in the photo. I decided to go for the 'scrapbook' look and i put the photo on and put white rectangles around it looking as if it has been taped in. Scrap books are a big thing for young people and most magazines do a scrapbook layout in their magazines. I stuck the name in white at the top over the corner of the photo to also link in with the scrap book effect. The font i used is the same as what i used on the contents page, i decided to use it as its a bouncy fun font and with only one simple bit of text on this page it would stand out alot against the photo. Similar to the contents page i used a gradient background. Most magazines do have coloured backgrounds and i thought i would continue with the same colour scheme throughout the whole magazine. I decided to do a gradient with pink into black and continue it on the other page with it running the opposite way so it looked flowing. At the bottom of my page there are a few symbols on my page. These symbols just added a different look to the page. I didnt want to add anymore photos as it would draw the attention away from the main photo. In the double spreads i analysed earlier one of the two pages is normally dedicated to a photo however they have a little bit more text on it; generally explaining what the pages were about.
The text on this page says:The ‘Indie Scene’ has taken over the south coast and everyone is there!
At the age of 17 and in her first year in the music industry shes really giving it a go, with 6 singles 5 of which hit the top 15 in the UKtop40 and her one off concert selling out in three day shes definately somebody to keep your eye on.
Since she was 6 shes had the inside experience of the indie/rock music industry - her father Rod Donnis was drummer for the band UTURN until they split after 20 songs and 2 albums. Darias* rockstar upbringing has meant being a singer has always been her ambition/ with people such as Katy Perry mentioning her in interviews her style and songs are definately making a trade mark.
When we caught up with her in her home town of Eastbourne she took LU! for a bag of chips and a walk along the pier where we found out about her view on the music industry today."Theres alot of great bands out there but most of them are too similar which ruins the whole magic of music. Music is supposed to have meaning and power behind it which isnt easily visable in todays music. With everyone singing about how ‘they’ve had their hearts broken’ it gets boring. It has to be memorable not only a catchy tune but with lyrics which mean something. Sooner or later people are going to get bored of whats out there if its all the same. So to break the loop and be different i decided to be outrageous and do a hyper song. A catchy beat about being in a good mood. Different i know and from just talking about it you’re going to think its crap but dont judge it till you hear it and you may be impressed. The lyrics have a meaning and are pretty fun. I had a great laugh recording the video and making this song in Eastbourne.
This is the second page to my two page spread, this page is dedicated to my article which is linked into the the photo next to it. The article is about Daria* the latest person on the indie scene. The article is linked to the whole magazine as she is from the south east. My local magazine idea has been emphasised here. I decided to use a plain/simple coloured font so that it stood out against the background, if it is not easy to read then people wont bother to read it. The text isnt too small and isnt too big. With a simple font it meant it was easy to read and looked presentable. I did a summary title at the top which summarised who and what it was about. I tried to make the writing as visable as possible and added a wider spacing gap so it wasnt too scrunched together therefore making sure people want to read it. On most magazines youd have bigger bolder writing highlightin remarks which have been made in an interview. If i had done that i would have had to limit my story. I did add a few quotes but not that many and didnt highlight them. I used the same background as i have done on the other page and the contents page however i have switched the colours round, if you look at the two page spread together we can see that the gradient colours flow from pink into black and back into pink. This helps to emphasise that the pages are somehow linked together. I have also added pictures to the bottom of the page, these are other photos i have taken of Daria, the different photos link into the article as i spoke about catching up with her in a local hotspot, the pier. The background of the pictures show different areas of the pier and also show the sea. My flat plans of this page do not include any photos and i just put text on, this would have benefitted me as i would be able to improve the article and add in quotes in bold however by doing this it looked boring and 'too much' so that is why i added a few pictures to the page.If i was to do my two page spread again i would add a little bit of text most likely to be an introduction to the page with just the photo on this means i can go into more depth with the text and i could copy other magazines and emphasise the quotes made by Daria.
I also changed my story on my page and instead of talking about her music influences and how shes in competition with others i focussed it on her so people could get a low down on the newest artist who is predicted to be a big hit.
Like most magazines i have used traditional magazine points to help me promote my magazine and make it look appealing, neat and presentable. I have used a column layout to make it look neat and put a sense of order to it. I also decided to use photos which use eye contact so that the readers can be drawn in and it forms a sort of link between the audience and person in the picture. I have also used a simple layout of the titles/barcode and tag line which is used in many magazines; making it easier for people to 'scan the barcode' or to identify the magazine.
However there are also some 'new' things which i have used in my magazine which arent used in other magazines. I decided that i would use coloured backgrounds on each page, this is different from most magazines as they use simple plain backgrounds so not to distract the viewer. The idea behinde this was to help with the 'style' of the magazine and help emphasise the difference between this magazine and the other magazines. I have also used bright colours so that the attention of the audience will be drawn to the magazine. Bright colours stand out so will catch the eye quicker. The different style of font used on the contents page is also different from many other magazines, normally it is a simple font e.g Arial/Times New Roman however i have decided to use a font i found on Dafont.com. I decided to use this as it makes the page more interesting to look at. People dont normally spend much time on the contents page but with different text it makes it more interesting for the reader.
Gaining a large audience for my magazine is my aim however it is more important that the audienceis suitable for the type of magazine. When i decided to make ListenUP i decided to aim it at students both male and female around 16-19. The younger adult. Not only because they are at the age of where music is a big influence to their identity but also because this age group is more likely to buy a magazine and are likely to go to gigs/concerts. I also decided to make it a local magazine; the South East. By targetting my audience to this group of people i had to think about the stories they would want to hear and what will appeal to them. Being an Indie magazine meant it was going to be different and have a look which would have to stand out against other magazines. To do this i chose colours which stood out and are bright therefore appeal to the young adult audience, language which wasnt too formal and was simple to understand but also used phrases or styles of writing (using capitals and lower case letters mixed up- ListenUP) which are different, fonts which had a memorable look (The Contents page has a symbol at the end of the title) and costumes; clothes which would be worn by the Indie kids. I looked at each little thing and attempted to make it look different from other magazines in this genre.
Publishing my magazine is vital for it to be noticed/purchased/to make profit, to do this i need to look at who would be best suitable. As my magazine is local to the South East I'd need to choose a publisher which has very good distribution levels in the area or just publishes in this area. As the articles included in the magazine are all about whats happening down the South or people who are local it means that it would be insignificant to anyone in any other area. After publishing it we have to look at who may stock the magazine, to gain a larger audience i would probably put it in most shops such as Tesco/Sainsburys or corner shops. They sell local newspapers which are very popular and there arent many local music magazines so it could be very popular. However as its only going to be in the South East distribution will have to targetted aswel therefore maybe putting it in shops which are specifically linked to the indie genre and record store such as HMV who have indie sections.
While producing the magazine i have used two new programmes which i hadnt used before - indesign and photoshop. They are very complex programmes to use however once you get the hang of them they are easy to use. Indesign provided me with the tools i needed to edit my text and design my magazine in the way i wanted i was able to go into much more editing depth than i would do with any other programme. For example the title text which i found on Dafont was easy to download and put onto my page. Photoshop also helped with the editing for example on the photo i used on the front cover i needed to get a perfect line of pink around Daria* this was made easier with the tools photoshop has. However some simple tasks which would have been simple to complete on paint/other editing programmes was made harder as there were specific ways you had to complete them.
Overall i think that my magazine portrays the genre that i decided to use, however i didnt stick to my flat plans, this worked well as i was able to improve my magazine but also in a negative way as the flat plans are there to help me and by changing it they are useless.
If i look back at my preliminary task i can see i have learnt alot. I have looked in depth about target audiences and what they like and the layout of magazines. Although my preliminary task was layed out in a simple way the use of columns/tables meant i was able to keep it neat. I also think i played it 'safe' because of the colours and the fact my background was left plain. Now i have learnt about target audiences i have learnt to link everything to the style and the genre.
